Bio | Erica van Zon

Born 1979

Erica lives and works in Wellington

Erica van Zon draws inspiration for her practice from her personal fascinations, memories, and encounters with the local and wider world. Avocados and eggs, Resene’s Colour Chart or views from aeroplane windows are recreated and repurposed by van Zon using craft-based materials of embroidery, ceramics, beading and tapestry. Her playful and infectious works tap into the language of visual trickery, pastiche and parody. Bordering on obsessive, each work acts as an entry point into a network of wide-ranging ideas. Moving through different time zones and aesthetic eras van Zon creates a collective understanding which is revealed, relived or questioned in the viewing of her work.

Erica van Zon holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, 2007. Recent exhibitions: Peppermint Twist, Jhana Millers; Six Days in Samoa, Auckland Art Fair; Verdant Geometry, Scape Public Art, Christchurch, 2018; Opal Moon, Local Lime at the Sarjeant Gallery, Whanganui and Objectspace Auckland 2017-18; Coffee Perhaps, The Dowse Art Museum, 2016-17; and Dogwood Days, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 2014-15. She was Artist in Residence at Tylee Cottage, Whanganui 2016, visiting artist at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 2014, and the recipient of the Asia NZ/ Wellington City Council WARE Residency, Beijing 2011.
