Jaime Jenkins, Breaking the Mould

Short film trailer
June 12, 2024

Breaking the Mould grants privileged access to sculptor, Jaime Jenkins, as she creates ceramic artwork in her bush-clad studio and sources inspiration at Okurei.

The sensory world is magnified as her practise gently reveals the impact of breath, the washing of water, aspects of environment, and the intention of sound as her artworks are moulded, arranged and committed to fire.

Jenkin’s deconstructs her traditional faith background, breaking from a ‘black and white’ view of the world, absorbing the full spectrum of her coastal environment, transmuting infinite colour, sound, taste and texture into her clay forms.

As the kiln-firing completes, the artist, with support from her sister Rachel, approaches her chain-creation with a wooden mallet to unravel its delicate links.

Produced and directed by Phillida Perry of  Daughter Films.

The film will premiere at the 2024 Doc Edge Film Festival before the feature length film Spontaneous Combustion: Songs for Barry Brickell. The film will be screened in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch
