Tyne Gordon, Suntrap
Tyne Gordon’s exhibition of new work, Suntrap, explores the anatomy of the landscape and the body, and the similarities between them. Her works are informed by nature and alchemical processes of chemical reactions.
Tyne approaches making with intuition, meditation, and method, searching for a balance between a material’s natural behaviour, and her own deliberate interruption of process. An intense interest in materiality is a significant aspect of her practice and she incorporates a range of materials in her work, from paint and metal to resin, organic matter, tyre tubes, cellophane, and ribbon.
It is important for Tyne that an equilibrium of binaries is met — liquid and solid, transparency and opacity, figuration and abstraction. Her works are consciously imperfect.
A feature work in Suntrap is Soft Machine, a 2m long pewter tapestry designed to incorporate the shifting natural light that filters through the gallery's large windows.
Featuring large gestural swoops along with intentional mark-making, the paintings in Suntrap are reminiscent of anatomy: muscles, blood, fat, as well as nature: swaying grass, swampy water, tangled tree roots, dappled light.
Tyne’s textural metal and resin and frames are cast from silicone molds of traditional frames — wobbling and snaking around the works, pushing the painting between 2D and 3D.
