Shelton focuses here on the root, the part of the plant referenced in its name and used traditionally to make halva and marshmallows because of its glutinous qualities. Mallows like to grow in moist areas, are tall, and have soft pink flowers related to hollyhocks. The plant is used in teas, tinctures, and according to various sources, as a “Demulcent, emollient, nutritive, tonifying, restorative (esp. mucous membrane & endocrine system), vulnerary, diuretic, expectorant, antispasmodic, relaxant, nervine and diuretic.”
