It is said that calendula blooms all the calendar months of the year, hence its Latin name. This work references the common use of the plant in butters and salves, and its use on the skin – here also on the skin of the work itself. Shelton found references to calendula being used to colour pharmaceuticals, in foods, and as medicine. Here, the plant is pictured breaking down in water to eventually combine with other elements and mimic the process of brewing a tea or a tincture for healing purposes. In these underwater works, plants engage in anaerobic fermentation, breaching the edge of the frame and seemingly expanding their explosive impact and legacy.
