In 2013, while studying at the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa, she encountered Hawaiian kapa-making, later returning to O‘ahu to deepen this learning under her main kumu, Verna Takashima. During this period Hindin also became involved with waka haurua, sailing aboard Hōkūle‘a and Haunui and learning celestial navigation alongside apprentice navigators preparing for Hōkūle‘a’s Worldwide Voyage. These intersecting experiences of cloth-making, voyaging and navigation became central to the development of her practice.",[],{"type":18,"text":435,"spans":436,"direction":21},"Hindin is closely involved in every stage of making her works, cultivating and harvesting aute, processing its inner bark into cloth and producing the tools and whenua pigments she uses. Her works incorporate kōkōwai, ngārahu, kerewhenua and pukepoto. Across her aute she draws on mātauranga Māori relating to maramataka, cosmology and celestial navigation. Her star maps use a visual language informed by whatu, rāranga and tukutuku to record the rising and setting of stars within the star compass and their movement in relation to the maramataka. These systems were important to navigation across Te Moana Nui a Kiwa and continue to provide ways of understanding direction, time, seasons and relationships with whenua, moana and te taiao.",[],{"type":18,"text":438,"spans":439,"direction":21},"Hindin has exhibited extensively in Aotearoa and internationally.
