In this exhibition, Kāryn extends her longstanding interest in geometric abstraction with a new series of ambient wall works.",[],{"type":18,"text":524,"spans":525,"direction":21},"“Kāryn Taylor makes cast acrylic panels with coloured lines glowing from within – self-illuminating light boxes that look somewhat like paintings in shape and form … The interpretation offered here is that these works articulate, bring into being, or make us acutely aware of, a blurring of boundaries between things typically construed as being in opposition – physical and metaphysical, reality and illusion, logic and feeling, object and subject, image and object, object and space, simplicity and complexity. This might be merely an interpretation, a linguistic abstraction of a much less fathomable experience with light, line, colour and space, but, if you happen to read this, perhaps it might do something as you experience the work, become bound up in that experience, add to its complexity, reduce it to an existing body of knowledge, or both. She feels that geometry, along with colour, has a strong and clear energy structure, a kind of embedded coding that the viewer can pick up on at some level. Kāryn produces self-illuminating light boxes, shadow boxes and multi-dimensional drawings. The light boxes are intense in colour with their glowing lines of light defying logic. They are analogue, glowing without power. Their illumination is striking, convincing many that there must be some kind of hidden mechanism or light source. The shadow boxes are more subtle and ephemeral; they use shades of grey to elicit three dimensional geometric forms. The drawings are made up of painted lines, steel rods and animated projection, combining moving and static lines in an attempt to push the work beyond three
