Harry Culy

Harry Culy is a contemporary artist and photographer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. Born in 1986, his practice is driven by a desire to record and examine the world around him.
Working with a large-format 4x5 field camera, Culy produces enigmatic black-and-white photographs drawn from everyday life — vacant interiors, stark portraits, and urban and rural landscapes that each hint at narratives beyond the picture plane. He frequently undertakes long-term projects spanning several years, returning to places and communities with which he has a personal connection.
His process is one of intensive observation, travel, and wandering, with each photograph functioning as a momentary pause within a broader investigation of place, memory, and belonging.
Culy's work is informed by traditions of Antipodean Gothic art and literature, drawing on the uncanny and the psychological dimensions of landscape. Through this lens, he explores unease, ambiguity, and displacement — reflecting on the complexities of identity, colonial histories, and the idea of home.
